One of the dirtiest revelations we’ve had about our economy of late is just how intrinsic it is to the political reality under which we are ruled.
This is, of course, exactly what he had hoped to avoid. This is a pseudo-oligarchy, in which the corporations have chosen to bleed into the legislate society as opposed to pierce it. This is, ergo, much more sinister in the eyes of many.
One of the most cogent case-in-point examples that we can point to today comes from China, whose booming consumerism, (and sheer population), has made them one of the most powerful economic forces in the world today. But, given that this mighty force is wielded by a communist dictatorship of the most inhumane variety, we must be wary of how and when we kowtow to Beijing.
The NBA learned this lesson the hard way after one of the league’s general managers stood up for democracy in Hong Kong.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver told reporters this week that China’s response to former Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey expressing his support for anti-government Hong Kong protesters in 2019 cost the league hundreds of millions of dollars.
Morey, who is now general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers, tweeted in October 2019 an image that read, “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.” Morey would later delete the tweet and explain that he did not intend to offend Rockets fans or his friends in China. Demonstrators were protesting against China’s control of Hong Kong at the time.
China first pulled games from CCTV shortly after Morey’s comments, but the NBA returned to Chinese televisions in March. Silver said the NBA lost “hundreds of millions” of dollars because of the 18-month blackout, but he also highlighted the league’s commitment to free speech for players, coaches and executives.
China has successfully bullied Disney and other entertainment companies into censoring their content for Chinese audiences, and the economic pressure they exerted on the NBA should be viewed as a warning.
