For eleven days, the nation was on edge.
Vicky White and Casey White, no relation, were still on the run, having ditched and stolen a number of vehicles already, the corrections officer and her inmate lover were in Evansville, Indiana when authorities finally confronted them.
What ensued was a short car chase, followed by the fugitives’ being rammed and flipped. It was at that moment that Vicky chose to end her own life with a bullet.
But, had the car not flipped, the pair had an audacious plan.
Casey White, the Alabama fugitive who escaped a county jail allegedly with the help of a senior corrections employee, told officers he likely would have engaged in a shootout with law enforcement had the pair’s vehicle not crashed, officials said Tuesday.
Vicky White was driving a Cadillac on Monday evening as the pair allegedly tried to evade law enforcement who had been surveilling the Evansville, Indiana, Motel 41, where the couple had been staying. They led police on an approximately mile-long pursuit before U.S. Marshals “basically rammed the vehicle and pushed it into a ditch,” Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding told reporters.
The day could have ended in bloodshed.
“We later found out had they not done that, the fugitive was going to engage in a shootout with law enforcement,” Vanderburgh said, explaining that Casey White had admitted his intentions during a subsequent police interview. “He said that he was probably going to have a shootout at the stake of both of them losing their lives.”
He added: “Their plan was pretty bold. They’re criminals. Their plan was faulty. And it failed. Thank God.”
Vicky White died at the hospital after being extricated from the wreckage. She had shot herself in the head.
Casey White will be extradited to Alabama post-haste, where he is likely to face additional charges stemming from his escape.
