The thing about authoritarianism is that the reins will always need to get tighter, won’t they?

Such is the case in Russia at the moment, as Vladimir Putin faces some rare resistance from his oppressed people, who risk life and limb to protest against the genocide being committed in Ukraine.

But the Russian leader hasn’t gotten his grip quite tight enough yet, it seems, as a serious stunt embarrasses him on Victory Day.

Hackers disrupted Russia’s Victory Day parade Monday by hijacking TV stations to accuse the nation’s citizens of having “blood on your hands” over the Ukraine war.

The country’s strictly censored cable and satellite TV stations flashed the “No to war” messages Monday just before warmongering President Vladimir Putin made a bloated show of strength in Red Square.

“You have the blood of thousands of Ukrainians and hundreds of dead children on your hands,” one of the various slogans also read.

And then:

“The TV and the authorities are lying. No to war.”

Putin’s Victory Day speech was subdued to begin with, which surprised a number of observers who’d been suggesting the Russian President would use the time to ramp up his rhetoric, or perhaps even declare war on Ukraine officially.
