Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has been a bumbling, fumbling mess, for the most part, and has exposed a vast weakness in the Russian military that very few of us saw coming.
This, of course, presents a major problem for Putin, who’s only real deterrent against China, the US, and NATO, was his assumed military prowess. Now decidedly on the defensive, the Kremlin has been forced to trot out a number of nuclear threats to keep the rest of the world from getting any ideas.
The latest frightening statement comes from the head of the Russian space agency, and suggests that NATO itself could be defeated by Putin in 30 minutes or less.
Dmitry Rogozin, Head of Russia’s Space Agency Roscosmos and former Deputy Prime Minister, said Sunday that in the event of a nuclear war, “NATO countries will be destroyed by Russia in half-an-hour.”
He stressed that such an event “cannot be allowed because the consequences will impact the [entire] Earth.”
Russia has been ramping up this rhetoric of late.
Russia has roused fear and concern over the potential use of nuclear weapons as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepares for the May 9 Victory Day celebrations, including a massive military parade and a “nuclear theme” that he hopes will send a “doomsday warning to Europe and the United States.
The parade will include the flight of Russia’s Ilyushin Il-80, known as the “doomsday” plane that will carry the administration’s senior leadership in case of a nuclear war.
Rogozin has long been a controversial figure, even by Russian standards, and many have suggested that putting stock in this statement may be premature or erroneous.
