Pelosi, Schiff Travel to Kyiv in Unannounced Visit

The following article, Pelosi, Schiff Travel to Kyiv in Unannounced Visit, was first published on Flag And Cross.

Vladimir Putin’s bellicose and belligerent nuclear threats have kept the western world from working too directly on Ukraine’s behalf over the course of the last several weeks, but recent actions by a few high level lawmakers indicate that American support for the sovereign nation is still strong.

Russia has repeatedly suggested that a nuclear strike against interfering nations is not off the table, and his US counterparts appear to have no interest in testing that theory or deploying troops to Ukraine otherwise.  This has led to a great many complaints from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has consistently implored the US, NATO, and others to get aggressive about countering this Russian offensive.

Zelenskyy would have an opportunity over the weekend to voice those complaints directly to US lawmakers.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led a congressional delegation to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

Pelosi is now the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Ukraine during the war, with the surprise visit adding to the growing momentum behind the West’s support for the country’s fight against Russia.

The pair had encouraging takes of the meeting.

“We are visiting you to say thank you for your fight for freedom,” Pelosi said during a meeting with Ukrainian officials, according to a video posted to Zelenskyy’s official Telegram account early Sunday. “Your fight is a fight for everyone, and so our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done.”

Zelenskyy said he was “very grateful for this powerful signal of support.”

“This shows that the United States today is a leader in strong support for Ukraine during the war against the aggression of the Russian Federation,” Zelenskyy said.

Congress is currently working on a proposed military aide package for Ukraine that could provide over $33 billion in hardware and support for the embattled nation.
