As Vladimir Putin pushes his unprepared and low-morale army back into Ukraine from the east and south, the world watches is horror.  War crimes have become the new norm in the invasion, and now the Russian army has even been accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of tons of grain from the still-sovereign nation.

While this sounds an awful lot like the sort of thing that would get the rest of world to react in a hurry, the Kremlin has consistently issued nuclear threats against anyone who dared to intervene, and ramped up that rhetoric this week with a simulated nuke strike on England.

On Thursdays edition of Channel One’s 60 Minutes programme, the chairman of the nationalist Rodina party, Aleksey Zhuravlyov, suggested Russia could launch a Sarmat missile attack on the UK.

Producers then cut to a map of Kaliningrad and seemed to suggest that missiles could be launched from the Russian enclave between Poland, Lithuania and the Baltic Sea.

The implication was that the nuclear weapons could reach Berlin in 106 seconds, Paris in 200 seconds and London in 202 seconds.

Putin appears to have no endgame in mind for the invasion, however, as he is already on track to find himself in front of the international criminal court on account of the war crimes his army has committed already.

Adding a nuclear strike to that list would constitute the sort of escalation that even he couldn’t escape retribution for.
