Cheney Denies Recording McCarthy Suggesting Trump Resign

The following article, Cheney Denies Recording McCarthy Suggesting Trump Resign, was first published on Flag And Cross.

There is one ugly rift within the Republican Party at the moment, and it continues to grow larger and more unwieldy by the week.

The basic split within the GOP today falls between the MAGA Movement and the “old guard”, establishment Republicans, the former being the far more enthusiastic and vocal of the two; the latter being well-entrenched in DC’s clandestine culture.

Now, as the two sides square off, they’ve found themselves using former President Donald Trump to attempt to drive a wedge between one another.

Rep. Liz Cheney on Friday denied recording or leaking audio from a phone call that appears to show House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy saying he would tell then-President Donald Trump to resign after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

A portion of that call, dated Jan. 10, 2021, aired Thursday night on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.” Hours earlier, McCarthy denied saying he would tell Trump to step down.

McCarthy has been a longtime public supporter of Trump, and what he said on the call could have the former President casting him out.

In the audio clip, the California Republican can be heard telling Cheney, R-Wyo., that he believed Trump would be impeached in the House and possibly convicted in the Senate after the Jan. 6 riot.

“The only discussion I would have with him is that I think this will pass, and it would be my recommendation you should resign,” McCarthy said, according to the recording.

Cheney’s place in the GOP has become nigh untenable due to her serious opposition to all-things-Trump, with her home state of Wyoming’s Republican Party refusing to even recognize her as one of their own.
