President Joe Biden is floundering; there is no more succinct way to say it. To characterize his first year in office as “disappointing” is generous, as even the most ardent Democrats among us see his early presidency as disastrous.
Yet still, Biden and his team continue to declare that they will seek reelection in 2024, and they do so emphatically. It’s almost reflexive, in all honesty, and could very well be little more than an attempt to shore up confidence in the party through 2022’s all-important midterms.
But there are rumblings out there in the progressive wings of the party, and a familiar face appears to be familiarizing herself with the current terrain of The Beltway – perhaps as a prelude to something forthcoming.
Former first lady Michelle Obama has a message for Americans ahead of the 2022 midterm elections: “We’ve got to vote like the future of our democracy depends on it.”
In a letter titled “Fight For Our Vote,” which was published Sunday as an ad in the New York Times, Obama and her voting rights organization When We All Vote called on Americans to continue engaging in democracy amid a historic attack on voting rights.
The letter — which comes as Congress has yet to move on voting rights legislation at the federal level — was signed by 30 other civic engagement, voting rights and voter mobilization organizations including the NAACP, Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight Action, Voto Latino Foundation, NextGen America, LeBron James’ More Than A Vote and Rock the Vote.
The letter comes as Democratic polling has shown a consistent decline in confidence in Joe Biden, and as many within the party appear to be very seriously considering pushing him out of the 2024 nomination.
