The following article, Joe Biden Hands Presidential Powers to Kamala Harris on Friday, was first published on Flag And Cross.
Throughout the course of Joe Biden’s first 10 months in office, there have been a never-ending parade of concerns about his health – both physical and mental – and the possibility that Vice President Kamala Harris may be called into action at any moment.
In fact, on several occasions, “the 25th Amendment” would trend on Twitter, as users suggested that it may be time for Harris to send Biden out to pasture herself. This, after many Americans had already begun to speculate about who was really running the country anyway.
On Friday, Harris did get a taste of what being in charge felt like, if only for a while.
President Joe Biden will transfer power to Vice President Kamala Harris while he undergoes a colonoscopy, the White House announced Friday morning.
“President Biden will transfer power to the Vice President for the brief period of time when he is under anesthesia,” Psaki announced to reporters.
The president is currently at Walter Reed hospital for the procedure where he will go under anesthesia and will also undergo a physical examination.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Harris would work from her office in the West Wing during Biden’s colonoscopy, while temporarily assuming the power of the presidency.
The moment was historic, on account of Harris’ gender.
Harris will assume the official title of Acting President Kamala Harris during the procedure, allowing her to issue an executive order or sign legislation. She will also serve as the Commander in Chief until Biden reassumes power.
Psaki cited Biden’s colonoscopy as “routine” and that the White House would release further details of his physical examination on Friday afternoon.
Biden’s colonoscopy appears to have been successful as of this writing, and the septuagenarian will likely be reinstated as POTUS later in the day.
