There has certainly been no shortage of friction between Donald Trump and the Republican Party over the years, some of which is just now seeing the light of day.

Trump is a bit of a political enigma, and a presence unto himself.  His arrival on the Republican scene was surprising to many, especially given his history as a business mogul in New York City.  And, of course, the idea that Trump would be beholden to any political entity just never felt on-brand for him.

Now, a new book reveals just how rocky that relationship became after the attempted insurrection of January 6th, and what it took to keep Trump in the GOP.

In his forthcoming book, “Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show,” ABC’s Jonathan Karl reports for the first time on a Jan. 20 conversation between the soon-to-be-former president and Ronna McDaniel, the Republican National Committee chair.

“I’m done,” Trump told McDaniel just after he boarded Air Force One for the last time as president, according to Karl. “I’m starting my own party.”

And so what kept him around?

The full exchange has McDaniel warning of the consequences — “we will lose forever” — and Trump saying he didn’t care. It was only after the RNC threatened to take control of Trump’s email list, among other potential legal actions, that Trump backed down, Karl reports in the book.

Trump, for his part, has suggested that he does not recall the conversation, but the verbiage described here parrots other threats he’s made in the past regarding a potential third party.
