Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is in a bit of a pickle this week, as schools in the Sunshine State continues to reopen amid an untimely surge in COVID-19 cases.
DeSantis has made it a point to err on the side of freedom in his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, choosing to actively push back against businesses and organizations that would require masks or proof of vaccination in their operations. He’s even gone so far as to attempt to ban such requirements, but these orders have been having a tough time in the court system.
Now, with the state’s young people about to head back for in-person learning, one Florida school board is simply planning to defy DeSantis completely.
A Florida school board voted overwhelmingly to require students to wear masks despite the state’s ban on mask mandates as the Delta variant of the coronavirus continues to spread across the country.
The Broward County School Board voted 8 to 1 on Tuesday in favor of the requirement, and approved filing legal action to challenge Florida’s ban, CBS Miami reported. School board chairwoman Dr. Rosalind Osgood said she did not want to put children’s lives at risk.
Students and staff with legitimate reasons will be able opt out of the mandate.
The governor has taken the unprecedented step of threatening to withhold funding from districts who impose such mandates – a move that has drawn criticism from across the political spectrum.
DeSantis is considered a likely candidate for the Republican presidential race in 2024, and his COVID-19 policies have certainly granted him plenty of time within the limelight of the national political scene.
