The following article, Trump-Backed Newcomer Mike Carey Wins Ohio Congressional Primary, was first published on Flag And Cross.
Mike Carey, the candidate backed by Donald Trump, won the GOP primary for Ohio’s 15th District, Tuesday, showing that Trump’s name is not the albatross Democrats say it is.
Carey beat out a big field of eleven other candidates for the right to face the Democrat on the coming election. And many of his opponents were backed by big name Ohio Republicans.
Carey will now face Democrat Allison Russo in the November election.
For his part, the former president celebrated Carey’s win.
“Great Republican win for Mike Carey. Big numbers! Thank you to Ohio and all of our wonderful American patriots. Congratulations to Mike and his family. He will never let you down!” Trump said in a statement.
Carey was quick to thank the president and keep his name associated with Trump.
“Tonight, Republicans across Ohio’s 15th Congressional District sent a clear message to the nation that President Donald J. Trump is, without a doubt, the leader of our party,” he said upon his win.
Some of the others Corey faced were backed by well-known politicians:
- State Rep. Jeff LaRe, was endorsed by Rep. Stivers to replace him in his seat
- Bob Peterson, a state senator who has the backing of Ohio’s leading anti-abortion group, Ohio Right to Life
- Ruth Edmonds, who has a strong following among Christian conservatives and the backing of Debbie Meadows, and is an activist and the wife of Mark Meadows, Trump’s last White House chief of staff
- Former state Rep. Ron Hood, had the backing of Kentucky Senator Rand Paul
Trump also campaigned for Carey having appeared in a tele-rally for the candidate. A pro-Trump PAC also put up $350,000 for ads for Carey.
Carey won and by extension, Trump showed that his name is not a drag on the party.
