Throughout the nation, a wild debate is raging on the subject of masks and schools, and just how much one will be dependent upon the other.
Our nation’s children are preparing to head back to the classroom in many cases, with states from coast to coast putting an emphasis on in-person learning during 2021.
But, with the “delta” variant of the coronavirus still raging, there are fears that the congregation of our kids could become a breeding ground for the highly contagious strain.
This flies in the face of many freedom-minded Americans, who believe that there is no authority in our country that tell them what they must or mustn’t wear on their face.
In Florida, the Governor is now looking to take some of the power out of the hands of the government on the issue of masks, and put it in the hands of the parents.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vowed Friday that he’ll bar any local school district from requiring students to wear masks even as the nation fights a resurgence of coronavirus.
The Sunshine State’s chief executive said he disagreed with guidelines issued Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends that all students in kindergarten through 12th grade wear coverings when they return to classrooms this fall.
Florida has long been one of the most outspoken states when it comes to coronavirus regulations, and DeSantis has been using this to his advantage as he moves up the polls of likely 2024 presidential contenders.
DeSantis added a personal touch to his message.
“Very soon I’ll be signing an executive order which directs the Florida Department of Education and Department of Health to issue emergency rules protecting the rights of parents to make this decision about wearing masks for their children,” the governor told supporters at a Cape Coral restaurant.
“We think that’s the most fair way to do it,” he added.
DeSantis went on to say that he and his wife have always opposed masks for their children.
“I have young kids. My wife and I are not going to do the masks with the kids. We never have,” he said. “I want to see my kids smiling. I want them having fun.”
Florida is currently the epicenter of the “delta” variant’s spread.
