So, if we wanted to be obtuse about it, the United States has but two nations to worry about on the global stage: China and Russia.
In the case of Russia, the issue lies in the fact that Vladimir Putin has hundreds of nuclear weapons and at least a few screws loose. That’s not necessarily a great combination in general, but, to add to that, the Kremlin seems hellbent on provoking America at every possible opportunity.
And then there’s China, who is seen as a threat both economically and militarily, if only for the sheer size of their population and their uncanny ability to abuse their citizens to the point of near-slavery.
This week, Beijing added another reason to be worried, however.
The Chinese Communist Party’s mouthpiece newspaper launched a blistering attack on the West, saying China’s nuclear plan was now vital to the country’s “strategic deterrence” against the US.
Hu Xijin, the editor of the Global Times, said “the number of China’s nuclear warheads must reach the quantity that makes US elites shiver”.
“We must be prepared for an intense showdown between China and the US,” Hu wrote in a chilling op-ed for the Chinese state-run newspaper.
“In that scenario, a large number of Dongfeng-41, and JL-2 and JL-3 (both intercontinental-range submarine-launched ballistic missile) will form the pillar of our strategic will.
“The number of China’s nuclear warheads must reach the quantity that makes US elites shiver should they entertain the idea of engaging in a military confrontation with China.”
This is one of the first times that China has overtly threatened the United States with nuclear warfare, marking an intense turn in the rhetoric between these two super powers.
