In the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, there was no telling exactly how accurate the information we were receiving was. After all, it was China who first experienced an outbreak of the deadly illness, and the government in Beijing is not known for their truthfulness or their forthcoming nature.
In fact, when COVID-19 began spreading throughout Europe, it became rather apparent that the Chinese had lied about the severity of the virus in order to either allow the world to be caught off-guard, or, possibly to attempt to cover up something worse.
Just weeks after the world first learned about COVID-19, it was discovered that a virology lab just a few miles from the first coronavirus outbreak just happened to specialize in bat-bored viruses with the same pathology. China insisted that this was only a coincidence, and many around the world took that information at face value.
Members of the House Intel Committee aren’t so sure, however.
Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee say there is “significant circumstantial evidence” that the COVID-19 outbreak stemmed from a leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, urging the federal government to put “more pressure on China” to allow for a “full, credible investigation” into the source of the global pandemic.
Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and Republicans on the panel released a report Wednesday, first obtained by Fox News, saying it is “crucial for health experts and the U.S. government to understand how the COVID-19 virus originated” to prevent “or quickly mitigate future pandemics.”
“International efforts to discover the true source of the virus, however, have been stymied by a lack of cooperation from the People’s Republic of China,” Republicans wrote. “Nevertheless, significant circumstantial evidence raises serious concerns that the COVID-19 outbreak may have been a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”
Should the lab-leak theory be proven true, it could add a very sinister dimension to the willfully false information that China had been spreading in the early days of the pandemic.
