Sen. Rand Paul from Kentucky stood up to address the Senate on Monday afternoon as those he serves with were preparing to vote in favor of a $900 billion coronavirus relief package, and told those of his party that anyone who backed the stimulus bill were no better than the Democrats they hammer on and accuse of being socialists.
“To so-called conservatives who are quick to identify the socialism of Democrats: If you vote for this spending monstrosity, you are no better,” the Kentucky Senator said.
The House passed the bill with lawmakers adding on a $1.4 trillion catchall spending bill to the mix just before the Christmas holiday.
The relief package will send a $600 direct stimulus payment to most Americans, along with a new round of subsidies for hard-hit businesses, restaurants and theaters.
“If free money was the answer… if money really did grow on trees, why not give more free money?” he said. “Why not give it out all the time? Why stop at $600 a person? Why not $1,000? Why not $2,000? Maybe these new Free-Money Republicans should join the Everybody-Gets-A-Guaranteed-Income Caucus? Why not $20,000 a year for everybody, why not $30,000? If we can print out money with impunity, why not do it?”
The Senate later aligned with the House and passed the COVID-19 relief package and government funding plan. The vote was 91-6, and members needed 60 votes to pass the bill since it skipped several parliamentary steps, Fox News’ Chad Pergram reported.
If you are curious as to who the other individuals are who voted against the COVID bill, that would be Sens. Rick Scott, Mike Lee, Marsha Blackburn, Ted Cruz, and Ron Johnson.
Earlier in the day, Sen. Ted Cruz tweeted out that it is “ABSURD” to have “a $2.5 trillion spending bill negotiated in secret and then—hours later—demand an up-or-down vote on a bill nobody has had time to read.”
And this is most definitely a huge concern. The main reason this bill was put together this way and shoved through is because there is a ton of pork spending contained in it that Democrats don’t want anyone to see.
We all know the reason this legislation was delayed in the first place was because Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi wanted to push through some wishlist items. It’s hard to believe she’d suddenly come around and be supportive of negotiations without some serious capitulations on behalf of Republicans.
It’s going to be scary seeing all the different ways the left wants to waste money.
