Gen. Gustave Perna, an official who is currently working with President Trump’s Operation Warp Speed coronavirus vaccine program has come out and stated that roughly 40 million doses of the vaccine could be ready for distribution in the country very quickly if the FDA authorizes emergency use.
Perna sat down for an interview with “Good Morning America,” Friday where he said that individual states would decide, with help from the FDA and the CDC, who will be the first individuals to be given the coronavirus vaccine.
Pfizer is asking the FDA to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, starting a process that could bring the first shots as early as next month. Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech offered preliminary data to suggest its vaccine appears 95% protective.
Perna says the “states are going to tell us exactly where they want it to be…and as soon as they figure out their distribution plan across their states, we will ensure that the vaccine gets there in a timely manner.”
Healthcare workers and those in nursing homes and other vulnerable people are expected to get the first vaccines. Health experts say it likely will be spring or later before there’s enough vaccine for early distribution to the general public.
So far, the early testing for the vaccine seems to be fairly promising, which means that the vaccine may reduce the spread of the virus significantly once it is made available to the masses.
However, we the people need to have access to information about what all is in the vaccine before it is taken. Not only that, but the government must ensure that no one will be forced to take the vaccine against their will, which is a big fear among many individuals.
No one should be forced to put something into their body that they don’t want to take, especially a vaccine.
