In a move that surprises absolutely no one, House Democrats have reelected their leadership team and have once again picked Nancy Pelosi to run for a fourth term as Speaker of the House, despite the fact they experienced some serious losses in in this most recent election.
Pelosi, who is 80-years-old, will run for the position during the first week of January when the House convenes for the 117th Congress. All members of the House, including Republicans, get to cast a vote for the speaker, which means she won’t have many additional votes to spare in order to reach the 218 votes needed to keep the position.
No Democratic lawmaker challenged Pelosi for the job, and there was little competition down the leadership chain. Majority Whip Steny Hoyer, 81, is expected to be reelected to his post, and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries won approval for another term as leader of the Democratic Caucus.
Democrats did not immediately announce the vote tally for Pelosi, or whether she won approval by acclamation.
Democrats approved Pelosi despite doubts, among some, that she should lead the party in the next Congress.
The only Democrat to voice disapproval with the idea of Pelosi getting another crack at the gavel was Rep. Elissa Slotkin from Michigan. A few others told the media they were currently undecided.
