Members of the GOP are starting to worry about the current resurgence of coronavirus cases in states that have been deemed to be critical to the reelection efforts of President Donald Trump in November.
The reason for the concern stems from the fact that a lot of the success needed for Trump to have a second term will come from whether or not the U.S. is able to continue opening up the economy after the shutdowns earlier this year without making the current COVID-19 pandemic worse than it already is.
Here’s more from The Washington Examiner:
The recent spike in COVID-19 cases has led to some Republican governors aligned with Trump reinstating some, though not all, of the restrictions that were in place during the lockdowns and federal GOP officials expressing more support for wearing facial coverings in public.
Vice President Mike Pence has resumed a busier public schedule for the coronavirus task force, which held its first briefing in two months on Friday to help allay growing concerns. “Our focus today is very much on the advent of a rising series of new cases across the American South,” Pence said, addressing must-win states for the ticket this fall. Pence donned a mask in Texas on Sunday.
Sen. Lamar Alexander, a Tennessee Republican, on Tuesday repeated his call for the president to start doing the same. “The president has plenty of admirers,” he said. “They would follow his lead. It would help end this political debate. The stakes are too high for this political debate … to continue.” On Sunday, Alexander told CNN, “I’m just saying, if wearing masks is important, and all the health experts tell us that it is in containing the disease in 2020, it would help if, from time to time, the president would wear one to help us get rid of this political debate that says if you’re for Trump, you don’t wear a mask, and if you’re against Trump, you do.”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke on Monday endorsing the use of face masks stating that “no stigma” should be attached the idea of wearing them.
“Wearing simple face coverings is not about protecting ourselves,” McConnell stated. “It’s about protecting everyone we encounter.”
“The president has said he has no problem with masks, that he encourages people to make whatever decision is best for their safety and to follow what their local jurisdictions say,” said Kayleigh McEnany, the White House press secretary, at a briefing held on Tuesday. “CDC guidelines are still recommended, but not required. And the president is the most tested man in America. It’s his decision whether to wear a mask.”
Look, there’s nothing wrong with individuals choosing to wear a mask. None at all. The problem a lot of Americans have is being mandated to wear them by the government, and the shaming that occurs if you choose not to wear them. That’s uncalled for and totally unnecessary.
Trump has staked a lot of his reelection on the ability of the United States to bounce back from the coronavirus mess and reopening the economy without having massive negative health consequences for those who go back to work.
However, new polling from the Pew Research Center has found that a lot of voters have shifted from supporting and approving of the president’s handling of the situation to disapproving of his efforts.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a top Trump ally, has worked especially hard to defend his state’s coronavirus management, in contrast with Democratic governors of hot spots who have nevertheless been praised by the media, such as Andrew Cuomo. Florida’s official coronavirus death toll was 3,419 on Sunday, compared to 24,835 in Cuomo’s New York. The numbers are even lower for Texas and Arizona.
One thing’s for sure. The left will take this resurgence and transform it into yet another anti-Trump narrative that they then infect people with through the use of mass media. It’s another tool in the toolbox, whether any of it actually has anything to do with Trump or not.
They are constantly looking for material like this that they can use to try and hamstring him with. Whether or not this is successful in the long run will have a lot to do with the president’s attitude toward reopening and how bad this resurgence in the virus actually gets.
