When it comes to corporate greed, there is almost no better target to trash than the pharmaceutical industry.
Sure, there’s Big Tobacco selling us ways to kill ourselves, and Big Oil allegedly destroying the planet, but Big Pharma is the most sinister of all.
You see, with cars and petrol it’s a necessary evil. The ends justify the means. With tobacco, we have chosen to accept the risks.
With the pharmaceutical industry, however, we find ourselves far more vulnerable and exploited. Americans who literally must have their medicine to live are at the will of the accountants at these companies, who are tasked with finding new and egregious ways to milk their clientele.
It’s dirty. It’s vile. And it affecst very nearly half of our country.
About 46 percent of the U.S. population used one or more prescription drugs in the past 30 days, according to a survey from the National Center for Health Statistics. With almost half the U.S. population taking drugs, it may be surprising that this figure is a slight improvement from 10 years prior.
Changing trends in prescription drug use over time may be influenced by changing disease prevalence and diagnosis, expanded treatment recommendations, and decline in the use of inappropriate or ineffective therapies,” according to the report.
Scarier still: This survey was conducted three years ago, lending us the unenviable conclusion that the true figures are likely much higher today.
That means that nearly half of the nation would be rendered sick, or worse, should these companies decide to gouge prices…something that we have already seen a plethora of in recent years.
